The Department of Information Technology (INTEC) of Gent University is widely recognized as a competence center in telecommunications and has participated in several European projects in the former Framework programs. More than 100 Ph.D. students are performing research on actual fields in telecommunication. The Wireless and Cable research group will be involvedin the BASEXPO project.

The Wireless and Cable group of the Department of Information Technology (headed by Prof. Luc Martens) has vast experience in high-frequency simulations and electromagnetic measurements. The group has simulated several wireless base station environments and maintains equipment to measure the electromagnetic fields around base stations for mobile communication, such as GSM and UMTS. Dedicated procedures have been developed to measure fields around base stations and are still under review. The research focuses on the simulation and measurement of 3G systems like UMTS. The development of electromagnetic measurement antennas and calibration are additional research topics of the group. Further, the group has facilities to measure absorption in tissue-simulating liquids, to measure dielectric properties of biological tissues and to calibrate EM probes (e.g., TEM-cell).

Prof. Luc Martens is a consultant for the Belgian government concerning the biological effects of electromagnetic radiation. He participates in the COST281 action and is member of the standardisation committee CENELEC TC 106x.
